Nov 19, 2013 - What to see at the Grand Central Terminal
More than just a central commuting station, the Grand Central Terminal is actually the largest of such facility in the world with a stupendous number of platforms - 44 serving platforms out of 67 of them. This station also used to be an intercity railroad terminal built in the heyday of American long-distance passenger rail travel. There are two levels here, and covers a whopping area of 48 acres of land.
Described as the world’s loveliest station, the Grand Central Terminal is the world’s number six most visited tourist attraction. Besides having platforms, since this is after all a commuting station, the terminal houses restaurants and fast food outlets. In addition, you can also find delis, bakeries, newsstands, a gourmet and fresh food market, and more than 40 stores for you to shop till you drop. Famous chain outlets such as Starbucks, Rite Aid and Apple Store can also be found at the areas surrounding the Dining Concourse, located just below the Main Concourse.
The Main Concourse of Grand Central Terminal is huge. To be exact, it encompases 275 feet in length, 120 feet in width and 125 feet in height. This area is the busiest part of the terminal, with the most noticeable icon in the whole terminal is the four-faced clock on top of the information booth. This infamous clock is made from brass and casted in Waterbury Connecticut, with its face made out of opalescent glass.
If you look up at the ceiling, you will be amazed at the beautifully restored elaborately decorated astronomical ceiling. If you look closely, you will realised there is something a little peculiar about the ceiling. Firstly, the sky is backwards and the stars are slightly displaced. There have been many opinions about that, but the most common would be that the artists Paul Helleu and Charles Basing painted it in reverse. Of course the more romantic reasoning was that the ceiling was based on a medieval manuscript that visualises the sky as if God was looking at it from outside a celestial sphere.
There have been many instances where the Grand Central Terminal location was used in films, novels and TV shows. Whenever a film maker wants to show that a person arrives or leaves New York, the Grand Central Terminal is used since it is a landmark building in New York that is both appealing, authentic and recognisable by anyone who looks at it, even at first glance.
